Africa-Press – Ghana. President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfil his promise of building modern stadiums in new regions and regions without one.
President Mahama said this on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during his first Presidential Media Encounter under his second administration.
“We promised to build stadia in all the new regions and the regions that don’t have modern stadia. So, as I speak, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is doing the design and the costing for the new stadia, and Upper East is one of the regions that has been captured to receive a new sports stadium that also is under the big push,” President Mahama said.
He also noted how Tarkwa Goldfields built a standard 10,000-seater-capacity stadium in Tarkwa for $13 million.
According to President Mahama, this cost-efficiency model could be replicated in regions, and he has tasked the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to contact the architect that undertook the Tarkwa Stadium project.
“When the government of Ghana has built stadium, it cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Those of you who have been to Tarkwa and have seen the stadium, it is a standard stadium, and it takes about 10,000 people. So, if they could build a stadium for $13 million, then the government should do the same,” President Mahama said.
