Africa-Press – Ghana. Ghana’s national 100m record holder Abdul-Rasheed Saminu was unable to progress to the 100m finals at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Saminu qualified for the semi-finals by placing second in heat seven, however in a fiercely contested race, he finished fourth with a time of 10.08 seconds.
The third semi-final race was won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville with a time of 9.86 seconds to advance to the finals, while Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo placed second to secure an automatic spot in the finals.
South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, who came third, grabbed one of the non-automatic qualification spots in the finals.
Saminu was a bright medal hopeful for Ghana in the 100m race but unfortunately missed out, especially after fellow compatriot Benjamin Azamati finished sixth in heat five.
However, Saminu would have a chance to redeem himself when he competes in the 200m and 4x100m races in coming days.
Other representatives for Ghana at this year’s World Athletics Championship include Alex Amankwah (800m), Rose Yeboah (High jump), Mustapha Bokpin (4×100), Barnabas Aggerh (4x100m), Joseph Paul Amoah (4x100m) and Fuseni Ibrahim (200m, 4x100m).
