Africa-Press – Ghana. Accra Hearts of Oak were frustrated by debutant Hohoe United, who held them to a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night.

The opening night of the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season did produce some exciting moments, with Afro-dancehall star Stonebwoy thrilling audiences with some good music.

Despite the stadium attendance not being filled to the brim, Stonebwoy did bring out the energy with fans singing along.

Back to the match, Hearts of Oak fans were highly expectant of their team with new coach Mas-ud Didi Dramani leading them in their first competitive fixture for the season.

The Phobians have failed to win any of their last four Premier League season openers (D1, L3), and their struggles continued when they were held by Hohoe United.

Hohoe United kept their opponents at bay in the first half, defending deep in their half, and had the best chance to open the scoring, but Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare demonstrated why he was the country’s best.

Hohoe United were reduced to 10 men in the final quarter of the match, while Hearts of Oak pressed for the first goal of the season.

But the former Division One Zone Three champions stood on business as they frustrated the Phobians and kept a clean sheet at the end of the match.

It was a disappointing start for the Phobians in the new season, considering the blistering pre-season form, with many pundits touting them as title-winning favourites.

Next up for Hearts of Oak is a road fixture against Dreams FC in week 2, while Hohoe United host Young Apostles in their first home fixture.
