President'S Nominee for Lawra Municipal Gets Strong Support

Africa-Press – Ghana. Members of the Lawra Municipal Assembly have confirmed Madam Soyelleh Cecilia as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

Madam Soyelleh, who President John Dramani Mohama appointed after the demise of Alhaji Adams Muazu, received overwhelming endorsement from the assembly members, polling 36 yes votes representing 88 per cent of the total 41 valid votes cast.

She was sworn into office by Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister.

The confirmation exercise, supervised by the Electoral Commission, took place in a smooth, calm and orderly atmosphere, witnessed by party supporters and other key stakeholders.

In her acceptance address, Madam Soyelleh, expressed profound gratitude to the president for the nomination and to the assembly members for the confidence reposed in her leadership and pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to promote inclusive development.

Madam Soyelleh, outlined her priorities, including improving the health sector, education, agriculture, prudent resources management and empowerment of women and youth and among other things, to make the municipality attractive for the constituents.

She noted that she would empower women through access to credit, adult literacy, entrepreneurship training and targeted poverty alleviation programmes, noting that “when women and youth rise, the entire community rises”.

She underscored the critical role of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, promising to work closely with the municipal directorate to ensure access to quality education for all households in the municipality.

She highlighted the importance of promoting community health and well-being, stressing the need for a healthy population to drive development.

“I will prioritize teachers motivations and healthcare services to enhance the overall quality of life in Lawra Municipality”, Madam Soyelleh said.

She further called for unity among all stakeholders to advance the Assembly’s developmental agenda.

She also pledged to lead with integrity, and transparency by ensuring that every cedi belonging to the people of Lawra would be used wisely for projects that would touch the real lives of the municipality.

She said, “Together, we will strengthen internal revenue mobilization, digitize our system and publish periodic reports to this assembly.”

She stated that, “I want to ensure electorate and the residents of the municipality that, they can expect development, unity and peace. Together, we will move forward for the betterment of Lawra”.

She emphasised her readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders, particularly the assembly members regardless of political affiliation, to ensure the municipality’s success.

“We need to put aside political divisions and come together for the sake of inclusive development in the municipality,” she said.

Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing commended madam Soyelleh on her election as the new MCE and charged her to uphold and defend the Constitution of Ghana.

The Regional Minister also urged her to learn from her predecessors and as well effectively collaborate with traditional authorities and regional leaders in discharge of her duties to drive developmental agenda of the Lawra Municipality.

Some residents who witnessed the event, in an interview expressed disappointment with the outcome of voting saying they expected a 100 per cent endorsement of Madam Soyelleh.

They said, “This municipality is far behind development under this administration after the death of the former MCE. So, we were expecting a 100 per cent for the new MCE to continue with the foundation laid by the forebears.”
