Africa-Press – Ghana. Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Central Bank of Ghana, says the duty of protecting the Cedi is a shared responsibility that transcends the responsibility of a single institution.

He has, therefore, called on Ghanaians to hold the Ghanaian currency with unwavering confidence and pride rooted in a collective belief of a brighter future for the country.

“The Cedi belongs to all of us. It carries our confidence, our effort, and our belief in the future of this country,” he said.

The governor was speaking at the opening session of the Cedi at 60 International Currency Conference which began on Tuesday.

The conference brought together players in the currency ecosystem including central bankers, payment specialists, currency designers, security and technology providers, academics, and industry leaders.

Dr Asiama said the BoG was working to re-anchor the Cedi as the unquestioned medium of exchange amid pressures toward currency substitution and dollarisation that threatened the country’s economic sovereignty.

“Our work on payments modernisation and the e-Cedi reflects our commitment to secure and interoperable forms of value, grounded in Ghana’s realities and informed by global lessons.

“This must be reinforced by strong economic stewardship and institutional stability to ensure the Cedi retains its value and relevance,” he said.

As expectations of young Ghanaians for transparency, convenience, and accountability continue to rise, he said the central bank was keen to ensure that the relationship of young Ghanaians with the Cedi would be shaped by the trust they place in the monetary institutions.

“Part of our responsibility – as policymakers, as technicians, and as leaders – is to ensure that the Cedi, however it is accessed, continues to serve their aspirations,” he stated.
