Africa-Press – Ghana. The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has criticised the government’s economic policies, saying they are focused on short-term gains rather than sustainable growth amidst rising concerns about job creation and inflation.
The Parliamentarians were commenting on the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament on the theme: “Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation,” presented to parliament on Thursday, November 13, by Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minister of Finance.
Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the Ranking Member on the Economic Committee of Parliament, on Wednesday, questioned the government’s priorities, saying, “You don’t have fiscal space, but you have space to buy two new executive jets.”
Mr Oppong Nkrumah, also the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ofoase-Ayiribi, made the remarks when he commented on the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy on the Floor of Parliament.
He emphasised the need for structural reforms, saying, “Mr Speaker, if your revenue doesn’t perform, you won’t get the money to invest in it. If your revenue doesn’t perform and you don’t invest it in the things that will create jobs, the young people will come for you at the end of the day.”
He accused the government of allegedly relying too heavily on manual labor in road construction, rather than creating industrial jobs.
“Mr Speaker, almost five hundred thousand of the eight hundred thousand jobs announced in the budget are going to be manual labor on road budgets,” he stated.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah called for a comprehensive approach to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges, focusing on the real sector, agriculture, and investments that drive growth, rather than short-term fixes.
