Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Simon Karikari Bonsu, the Presiding Member (PM) of Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly in Ashanti region has stated that, the location of the district’s 24-hour market at Asuofua, was a collective decision of the general assembly.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Barekese, he said, all the 25 members of the assembly took the decision at the last general meeting held to approve the 2026 budget of the assembly.
A group of residents in the districts have, through a demonstration petitioned the Assembly over an alleged relocation of the 24-hour market project from Barekese to Asuofua.
According to the petitioners, the project should remain at its original location.
However, Mr Bonsu pointed out that the claim that the project was originally designed for Barekese, but was later moved to Asuofua was untrue and baseless.
He emphasised that Asuofua was selected for the project as a result of its economic and social advantages over the other communities, adding that Asuofua was the gateway to the area from Kumasi and other parts of the region.
He mentioned market viability, social visibility, security, and other factors as some advantages the town had for the 24-hour market, which would include night trading activities.
Mr Bonsu appealed to the demonstrators to exercise restraint and wait for the response to their petition instead of resulting in violence that could frustrate the developmental process of the Assembly.
He opted to remain silent about the petition until he got a copy and read the content.
Meanwhile, the Asuofua traditional council has commended the Assembly for choosing the town for the 24-hour market facility.
