Africa-Press – Ghana. The five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, January 22, signed a Peace Pact, affirming their commitment to accept the verdict of the January 31 presidential primaries with dignity and to support the eventual winner of the contest.

The aspirants appended their signatures to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pledging to uphold peace and harmony before, during, and after the polls.

They held hands together to symbolise unity and cohesion within the party.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the Council of Elders, Akosua Frema Opare, former Chief of Staff representing the Party’s Council of Patrons, Justin Frimpong Kodua, NPP General Secretary; and Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu.

Dignitaries present also included former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, members of the National Peace Council, and MPs from the Minority Caucus.

The five aspirants who signed the pact were: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana and economist, credited with spearheading Ghana’s digitalisation agenda, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central, businessman, and media entrepreneur.

The rest are Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Food and Agriculture, with a PhD in Information Systems and a military background in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education, PhD holder in Educational Policy, and advocate for STEM reforms and Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary, civil engineer, and long-serving party stalwart.

Each aspirant received a signed copy of the MoU, symbolically reinforcing their pledge to unity.

The ceremony was facilitated by the Party’s Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by Mr. Joseph Osei Owusu, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and ex-MP for Bekwai.

Mr. Osei Owusu explained that the MoU was designed to ensure aspirants fully support the eventual winner, reiterating the Committee’s commitment to delivering free, fair, and transparent primaries.

“This pact is our collective assurance to the Ghanaian people that the process will be peaceful and credible,” he stated.

The signing ceremony is expected to reassure party members, delegates, and the wider public of the NPP’s dedication to unity and democratic principles. It signals the aspirants’ willingness to place party cohesion above personal ambition as they prepare for the January 31 contest.

Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the Council of Elders, urged the aspirants to refrain from employing “macho men” during the polls, stressing that the Ghana Police Service had been tasked to provide security at polling stations nationwide.

“There is no need for private security arrangements. If any group has engaged any private security, dismantle them now.

Refrain from accusations against the leaders of the party after the elections,” he emphasised.

The peace pact marks a significant milestone in safeguarding the integrity of the primaries and ensuring that the NPP emerges stronger and united ahead of the 2028 general elections.
