Parliament Urges Health Facilities to Strengthen Security

Africa-Press – Ghana. Members of Parliament (MPs) have called on administrators of both public and private health facilities to tighten security measures to safeguard patients and newborns.

The call follows a recent incident at the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra, where a four-day-old baby boy was stolen from the postnatal ward.

In a statement read on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, Member of Parliament for Ada, commended the swift response of the Ghana Police Service, which led to the rescue of the baby and the arrest of the suspect.

She urged health facilities to adopt stricter surveillance and access control systems to prevent similar occurrences.

On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, a woman allegedly disguised as a nurse unlawfully entered the postnatal ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic and stole the newborn baby belonging to one Precious Ankomah.

CCTV footage captured the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Latifa Salifu, wrapping the baby in cloth and leaving the facility.

She was seen fleeing on a motorbike. The suspect was tracked down after she reportedly called her sister, claiming she had given birth.

Suspicious of her story, the sister alerted authorities, leading to her arrest by the Dansoman Police.

The baby was safely recovered and reunited with his mother.

The incident sparked tension at the polyclinic, with relatives of the baby confronting hospital staff over alleged negligence.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face trial in due course.
