Africa-Press – Ghana. Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted the club has to be realistic over the future of star midfielder Youri Tielemans, who remains linked with bigger sides.
Tielemans got his career back on track when he joined Leicester in January 2019, initially on loan. He has since helped steer the Foxes to back-to-back fifth place finishes in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification both times.
The Belgian also scored the winner in the 2021 FA Cup final and, despite more recent concerns over his form, has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
“We are real as a football club. You’ll get people asking if we can hang on to these players for the next six or seven years,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.
“But the reality is that if a player does really well at Leicester, he may want to leave and move on to another club. For us, it’s just about being ready for that.”
90min revealed over the weekend that Tielemans has no interest in extending his stay at Leicester, with his representatives informing the club that he doesn’t wish to sign a new contract – his current deal is due to expire in 2023, which means he will soon enter the final 12 months.
Youri Tielemans still not interested in extending Leicester stay
At that point, Leicester will have a big decision to make as continued refusal to consider fresh terms would leave them likely to lose him as a free agent if they don’t sell this summer.
Tielemans has already been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, while Tottenham were interested in signing him as he was about to join Leicester.
