Africa-Press – Ghana. Bishop Marcus Wiredu, Head Pastor and Founder of the Golden Lampstand Ministries, on Monday said envy stagnates productivity, hinders goal setting, and impacts negatively on one’s physical state of health.
Speaking at a seminar organized by the Golden Lampstand Ministries on the theme: “The Dangers of Envy,” Bishop Wiredu said, envious people can be stressed and overwhelmed; fall to depression, anxiety, the develop prejudice, and personal unhappiness.”
He said the negative effects of envy may extend beyond how people feel and turn to have an impact on one’s relationships with other people. “In fact, there’s reason to think that the negative experience of envy can lower people’s willingness to help others and maybe even make people more likely to harm others,” the cleric noted.
Bishop Wiredu, who is also the Founder of Hopefield Bible College, explained that envy was a physical character, rather than the spiritual, quoting Galatians 5:19-21, which emphasizes that “envy is the work of the flesh”. He stressed that, “envy is the first classroom of witchcraft. It has the capacity to take your life and that of others along the destruction path.”
Citing Biblical verses to support the message, Bishop Wiredu said trying to become something one else is dangerous and would only lead to death; “an envious person can never be satisfied because of the taste to always have more than what others are having.”
He expressed concern that the youth of today seemed to envy the kind of life people are living especially on social media and get influenced, without thinking of the means some of them use to get up there.
Bishop Wiredu called on the Ghanaians to learn to be content with whatever they have and fight to move upward not being envious of the other person next door.
He stressed that to overcome envy, “shift your focus to the goodness in your life, remind yourself that nobody has it all, and avoid people who habitually value the wrong things.
“Spend time with grateful people, understand that marketers routinely fan the flame, celebrate the success of others, and be generous”.
