Africa-Press – Ghana. Organisers of the Africa Basketball Festival (ABF) have unveiled plans for a bigger fifth-anniversary edition, introducing a “Five Theme” concept to highlight the event’s growth and future ambitions.
The festival, now a major December attraction, would run from December 10 to 14, 2025, at the University of Ghana Basketball Court in Legon.
Participating countries for the main festival are Ghana, China, Liberia, the USA and Nigeria, with an additional fixture featuring Ghana Communication Technology University and Wisconsin University.
Mr Yaw Sakyi Afari, Founder of RITE Sports and ABF, said the milestone edition reflects ABF’s journey and its vision for a continent-wide celebration of basketball, music and fashion.
“We’re looking forward to such an amazing fifth anniversary, which will start on the 10th of December and climax on the 14th of December with five countries,” he said.
Mr Afari said ABF aims to become a touring African event, with plans to announce the next host country in 2026 for the 2027 edition.
“We want this to be a global celebration rotating across countries,” he said.
Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority, praised the festival’s growth, calling it “a lifestyle and a movement” that supports sports development and tourism.
“It is more than basketball. It’s more than a festival. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a movement,” he said.
According to him, the festival is contributing to both sports development and Ghana’s tourism agenda.
“We’re moving into an era where President John Mahama has been hitting it continuously. We need to sell Ghana, the good side of Ghana, given every opportunity,” he said.
He expressed optimism about the growing interest from international teams and fans and believes it would inspire young people across the sports ecosystem.
Mr Ankrah said the NSA was committed to expanding basketball infrastructure nationwide.
Since its inception, ABF has blended sport, music and fashion to create a unique entertainment platform.
The event is sponsored by Glico General Insurance, GTS Drilling, Indomie Noodles, GTV Sports Plus, Points Africa, Warrior King Watches, Lamborghini Energy Drink, The Luckiest, Minimie Atsomo, Lush Hair, Verna Water, the Ghana Basketball Association, and the Ghana Tourism Authority.
It is organised by RITE Sports Services and hosted by the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate.
