Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr Ebenezer Aidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West, has called for collective action to tackle the menace of illegal mining in the area.

Mr Aidoo emphasised the severe impact of illegal mining on the environment, local communities’ wellbeing and called on individuals within the community to be more responsive towards the environment.

“Ghana’s water bodies and lands, which should serve as sources of drinking water, recreation, food security and even energy generation are gradually becoming dead from the ravages of illegal mining activities through harmful chemical disposals,” he added.

Already, the country is recording defective newborns, with recent study reports indicating that even cocoyam leaves (Kontomire) from areas where these nefarious actions are rampant have become poisonous.

The Ahanta West Municipal Chief Executive said; “The ripple effect of galamsey is enormous. We must all come together to fight this devastating calamity”.

Mr Aidoo, together with the National Security and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service, led a decisive operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the municipality.

According to the MCE, the joint task force successfully conducted an operation deep within the Cape Three Points Forest where seven individuals were arrested, and more than ten “Chanfang” machines, commonly referred to as “one leg” were destroyed.

Mr Aidoo reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the environment and upholding the laws, highlighting the Assembly’s dedication to long-term environmental sustainability and community protection.
