Africa-Press – Ghana. It was an intense Division One playoff match between Real Tamale United (RTU) and Techiman Eleven Wonders at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.
But it was Eleven Wonders who came out on top after Farouk Ameyaw scored a late penalty to secure qualification for his side as they edged RTU 2-1 in a fiercely contested encounter.
The game, as expected, started on an intense note, but it was Eleven Wonders who dominated possession in the early minutes.
Frank Awere opened the scoring for Eleven Wonders with a beautiful left-foot finish that stunned RTU goalkeeper Abdul Rauf Mahammued.
The game was quite open, unlike a playoff encounter, with so many tackles flying in, but referee Selorm Yao Bless ensured discipline on the field of play.
RTU danger man Jonas Wisdom Manyina posed a significant threat to the Eleven Wonders defence and nearly pulled parity in the latter stages of the first half but his effort went wide.
Eleven Wonders goalkeeper Kenneth Owusu kept his calm in the post and ensured his side held onto their first-half lead.
RTU started the second half as the better side and pressed the Eleven Wonders defence in search of the equaliser.
Referee Yao Bless awarded a penalty to RTU in the 64th minute after Wisdom Manyina was brought down in the area, and Blabala Bamon stepped up to convert from 12 yards.
Heading into the final quarter, the game was very open, and it was destined not to end in a draw with both sides pressing for the winner.
Ameyaw scored the winning goal for Eleven Wonders from the penalty spot in the 89th minute, much to the disappointment of the RTU players and spectators.
Eleven Wonders will now join Hohoe United and Swedru All Blacks, who have also booked qualification to the next season’s premier league.
