Africa-Press – Ghana. Antonio Conte has admitted he has until the end of the season to prove to Harry Kane that his Tottenham project is worth sticking around for.
Kane grabbed a superb brace in Spurs’ late 3-2 win at Manchester City on Saturday, and the England captain revealed that he has his sights set on breaking Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals after taking his own tally to 173.
Ahead of their trip to Burnley on Wednesday evening, Conte backed Kane to continue his impressive scoring feats, but that he also wants to prove to him that he can win trophies in north London.
“Harry is a player with great ambition and it must be this way because we are talking about a world-class striker,” Conte said. “Records are important but, at the same time, it’s also important to lift trophies. Only when you win and lift trophies can you go into the story of the club.
“There is only one way to convince this sort of player. It is to work, to convince them of your football knowledge and to improve them. Only this way do you have the respect of players.
“We are trying to start to build something important together. It won’t be easy but I think Harry, like the other players, understood the situation.
“We have to train for three or four months to try to improve and build something important. But I understand then that every player has to make the best decision at the end of the season.”
Conte also revealed that Kane is picked up a knock in the win at Man City, but joked that he would play the striker at Burnley even if he had only one leg.
After their trip to Turf Moor, Tottenham face Leeds on Saturday as they look to strengthen their top-four hopes. They then travel to Middlesbrough in the fifth round of the FA Cup next Tuesday.
