Ashanti Regional Minister Condemns Student Hooliganism

Africa-Press – Ghana. Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, has condemned acts of hooliganism and attacks that often characterized inter-schools competitions in the region.

He described such acts as unpleasant and demotivating to organizers as they always had to be worried about maintaining peace and order.

He directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to disqualify schools which would misbehave during such events from participating in future ones.

“We are all one people despite the schools we belong to.

We need to stop fighting against each other and come together to achieve a goal,” Dr Amoakohene, stated after joining a team of medical officers to treat an injured student at the ongoing Ashanti High Schools Music Fiesta at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

A male student from the Toase Senior High School in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality sustained deep injury between his eyebrows and eyelids during a misunderstanding, which led to a confrontation between his school and the Kumasi Senior High Technical School (KSTS).

The Music fiesta, which is being organised by the GES and partners on the theme: “Music Without Borders, United in Harmony”, aims at unearthing the hidden musical talents in students, promote the Ghanaian music style and culture, while projecting local music among the youth.

Clad in various school uniforms, over 2,000 students from 30 SHS, teachers and music enthusiasts converged at the sports stadium to rally support behind the competing schools.

Also, some Ghanaian music stars such as Kojo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, King Paluta, and others, showed up to entertain the students with their performances.

The competitors displayed their singing, dancing and instrumental skills as they replicated music from different genres such as reggae, gospel, hiplife, hip-hop, oldies (Adadem) and others.

Each group of performers was given a time frame of 10 minutes to showcase their talents in the presence of a group of judges.
