Africa-Press – Ghana. The Awutu-Senya-East Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and a security taskforce, has embarked on a decongestion exercise at the Central Business District (CBD).

The move is intended to ensure free flow of traffic both human and vehicular to prevent unforeseen accidents on the shoulders of the road.

The exercise involved the demolition of makeshift stalls and unauthorised sheds on pavements and along the roads.

Some affected individuals besieged the premises of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mrs Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, to protest the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Assembly, Mr Seth Sabah Serwornoo-Banini, stated that several meetings had been held with leaders of the traders, the traders themselves, security officials, and other stakeholders prior to the exercise to reach mutual agreement, and was therefore surprised at the traders’ reaction.

He added that, as part of the discussions, there was an agreement to relocate the affected traders to a satellite market at Iron City, a suburb in the Municipality.

He assured that dialogue would continue to ensure the sustainability of the exercise but vowed that the law would take its course against offenders.

The Assembly’s NADMO Director, Mr Nash Nyande, cautioned that the exercise would not be a nine-day wonder, with plans to operate 24 hours daily to prevent re-occupation by the traders.

He urged the traders to comply with the directives to avoid vehicular accidents and ensure their own safety.
