Africa-Press – Ghana. Vice President Dr. Mahamoud Bawumia has inaugurated a cutting-edge medical waste treatment facility located in Kperisi, near Wa.

This facility, boasting advanced capabilities, signifies a significant leap forward in the region’s waste management infrastructure.

Accompanied by a distinguished delegation including Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Minister of State Ambrose Dery, Former Secretary of the NPP Kwabena Agyapong, Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, and the Upper West and East Regional Ministers Hon. Stephen Yakubu and Hon. Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, Dr. Bawumia underscored the critical role of this facility in ensuring the safe and efficient disposal of medical waste.

During his address, Dr. Bawumia lauded the collaborative efforts between the government and the Jospong Group of Companies, spearheaded by Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, in revolutionizing Ghana’s waste management sector.

He particularly highlighted President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision, which has manifested in the completion of 10 Integrated Recycling and Compost Plants (IRECOPs) and seven Medical Waste Plants across the nation.

Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their enduring partnership. He emphasized the collective effort required to achieve such milestones and thanked everyone for their unwavering support.

Ing. Senam Tengey, General Manager of Medical Waste Limited, elaborated on the advanced treatment processes employed at the plant. He highlighted the utilization of modern mechanical and biological treatment mechanisms, as well as the implementation of a digital platform for waste pickups, ensuring efficient and timely service.

Ing. Tengey also emphasized the facility’s role in job creation and development in the Upper West Region.

Ms. Sophie Malu, West Africa Area Sales Manager of Ecosteryl, Zoomlion’s key partner in medical waste management, commended Zoomlion’s commitment to a healthier and more sustainable future.

She stressed the importance of collective responsibility in environmental protection and praised Zoomlion’s efforts in enhancing quality of life and promoting eco-friendly practices.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Mr. Stephen Yakubu, expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo and Zoomlion for their continuous efforts to improve the lives of Ghanaians, particularly in the Upper West Region. He highlighted the facility’s potential for eco-tourism and its contribution to research and job creation.

Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, emphasized the project’s role in providing sustainable employment for local communities and thanked the landowners for their support.

The new plant, serving as a multifaceted hub for recycling, composting, medical waste treatment, wastewater treatment, research, tourism, and waste recovery, is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, with 300 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs locally, according to the waste entrepreneur.

In total, the ten facilities are projected to create over 10,000 jobs in the plastics recycling and organic fertilizer sectors, while also serving as research and training centers for academic institutions.
