Africa-Press – Ghana. Elder Dr. Jonas Tetteh Numo, 59, Deputy Chief Accountant I, has been adjudged the overall best farmer in the Yilo Krobo Municipality during the 41st Farmers’ Day celebration at Huhunya near Boti Falls.

The event, held under the theme, “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, and Secure the Future,” brought together civil servants, political figures, traditional authorities, assembly members, and residents from Huhunya and neighbouring communities.

He received a certificate, a medal, a tricycle, a bag of organic fertilizer, a pair of Wellington boots, five cutlasses, a backpack sprayer, two packs of egg crates, and a bottle of insecticide in recognition of his outstanding farming achievements.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Numo credited former National Best Farmers, Mr. Joseph Kwesi Odjeayem (2008) and Mr. Narh Davis Korboe (2009), as his sources of inspiration.

He emphasized the crucial role of farmers in feeding communities and driving national growth.

He also appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to rehabilitate rural roads to ease the transportation of farm produce to markets.

“When roads are motorable, transporting foodstuffs to market becomes easier, making the ‘Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, and Secure the Future’ initiative more effective,” he said.

Highlighting the municipality’s production of perishable goods such as vegetables and mangoes, Dr. Numo urged the government to establish storage facilities and a mango juice factory to reduce post-harvest losses and create employment opportunities.

He encouraged both civil servants and others to consider farming as a supplementary career, stressing its potential to increase income and support national food security.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Francis Akumatey Addo, Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive, underscored the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector from subsistence farming to a modern, competitive agro-industrial economy.

He highlighted initiatives such as new agro-processing hubs, expanded irrigation projects, dam rehabilitation, solar-powered boreholes, and strategic international partnerships to strengthen seed independence and boost productivity.

According to the MCE, 211 farmer groups involving 4,220 farmers have been sensitized under the Feed Ghana Policy.

“The Assembly distributed over 19,000 oil palm seedlings and 1,000 coconut seedlings, partnered with the UN University to establish a climate-friendly gari processing factory, and collaborated with the Netherlands government to create a Seed Bank at Abrewanko. A School Gardening Program was also launched to cultivate agricultural interest among children,” he added.

Ms. Augustina Wodo, the best female farmer from Obawale, called on the government for continuous support, urging that agricultural produce be purchased to minimize post-harvest losses.

Other winners were also recognized with certificates, medals, and farming tools.

The 1st Runner-Up received a Honda self-propelled slasher, mini trailer, spraying machine, cutlasses, and other essentials, while the 2nd Runner-Up received a backpack slasher, mini trailer, spraying machine, and cutlasses, among others.

Winners in various categories—Best Cabbage, Tomato, Maize, Cassava, Mango, Rice, Pepper, Vegetable, Oil Palm, Livestock, Roots & Tuber, Innovative, Non-Traditional, Physically Challenged, Youth, and Agricultural Staff Farmers—received certificates, medals, and farming equipment tailored to their production.

The ceremony highlighted the growing importance of modern agriculture in Yilo Krobo, reaffirming the municipality’s commitment to food security, youth engagement, and agro-industrial development.
