Africa-Press – Ghana. Bonnie, nominee for Chief Justice, has emphasised the urgent need to expand the use of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) system as a means of easing the heavy backlog of cases in Ghana’s courts.
The nominee made this call during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament in Accra on Monday.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said upon approval, he would spearhead the rollout of an electronic justice system across all regions and leveraging artificial intelligence in administration of justice in Ghana.
According to him, digitization would not only improve efficiency but also enhance transparency and accessibility in the judicial process.
He noted that technology-driven reforms were essential to meet the demands of a modern justice system.
The nominee also highlighted the pressing need to fill 116 vacancies at the magistrate courts, stressing that the shortage of personnel had contributed significantly to delays in justice delivery.
He assured the committee that under his leadership, efforts would be made to ensure these positions were promptly occupied.
In improving conditions for the lower bench, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie underscored the importance of better remuneration for justices at the lower courts.
He argued that competitive salaries and improved working conditions would attract highly qualified professionals to the lower bench and judicial staff, thereby strengthening the foundation of the justice system.
In his remarks, the Chief Justice nominee painted a vision of a judiciary that was more responsive, efficient, and accessible to the public.
By combining ADR mechanisms, technological innovation, and improved staffing, he said he believed Ghana’s courts could deliver justice more swiftly and fairly.
The nominee stated that his tenure would be anchored on procedural clarity, efficiency and open justice, noting, “The law should be the law for everybody.”
