Africa-Press – Ghana. Togbega Addai Kwasi Dzani XIII, Paramount Chief of the Awudome Traditional Area, has appealed to the government to institute a special national award scheme to recognise chiefs who actively engage in farming and contribute to national food security.

Speaking at the Ho West District’s 41st Farmers’ Day celebration held at Awudome Kwanta in the Volta Region, Togbega Dzani XIII, said honouring such traditional leaders would not only acknowledge their efforts but also encourage more chiefs to support agricultural development within their jurisdictions.

He noted that many young people were idle and reluctant to take up farming, adding that visible leadership and recognition in the agricultural sector could help change that mindset.

“Agriculture remains one of the most lucrative and reliable professions. When chiefs lead by example, it inspires the youth and the community at large to see farming as a dignified and profitable venture,” he said.

Togbega Dzani, who Chaired the function, urged the youth to embrace agriculture as a viable career option, stressing that the sector had the potential to provide sustainable livelihoods and contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic growth.

In a speech read on behalf of Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament (MP) of Ho West, he assured farmers of government’s continued support.

He announced that the district would soon benefit from the Farmer Service Centre programme, which aimed to improve access to agricultural machinery, inputs, and technical services.

Mr Bedzrah also donated three motorbikes to support the organisation of this year’s district Farmers’ Day celebration, reaffirming his belief that farming remained a rewarding and respectable vocation.

“Farming pays, and it must be considered a profession of pride,” he added.

A total of 17 farmers were honoured at the event and presented with certificates, farm inputs, and other prizes in recognition of their contribution to food production and rural development.

The Ho West District, alongside other districts in the Volta region, observed the Farmers’ Day celebration on Thursday, November 27, ahead of the National Farmers’ Day ceremony scheduled to take place in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, on Friday, December 5.

The ceremony drew together traditional leaders, government officials, farmers, and community members who applauded the awardees for their dedication and hard work.
