Africa-Press – Ghana. Millions in Germany can now access unprecedented public transport discounts designed to encourage more people to make a permanent change to their travel habits amid soaring fuel costs.
From Wednesday, anyone can buy a €9 ($9.66) monthly ticket allowing unlimited use of local and regional bus and train services in Germany. The ticket will also be available for July and August, though trains, in particular, are expected to be very crowded as a result.
At the same time, German fuel taxes are being slashed to reach the lowest level permitted under EU law by the end of August in a bid to ease prices at the pump in the famously car-loving nation.
The price of petrol is forecast to drop by about 35 cents per litre, while the cost of diesel is likely to drop by about 17 cents. The move, which will cost the federal government billions in lost tax revenue, comes in response to soaring energy prices and also aims to support commuters.
