COVID-19 fatalities would have been overwhelming under the NDC – Sammi Awuku

Africa-Press – Ghana. In a recent statement, Senior Campaign Aide to Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, Sammi Awuku, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its alleged mishandling of health crises, suggesting that if COVID-19 had struck during their tenure, fatalities would have been overwhelming.

Awuku emphasized the NDC’s purported failure to effectively manage cholera outbreaks during their governance, citing the tragic loss of 250 lives to the disease in 2014/2015.

He argued that this record of incompetence raises serious doubts about their ability to handle a more complex crisis like COVID-19.

“NDC and NPP are political parties, but we are not the same. In 2014/2015 about 250 people lost their lives due to cholera, If COVID-19 had come during the tenure of the NDC I can bet my last coins every household in Ghana would have lost a family member to the pandemic, because even cholera they couldn’t rescue us, not to talk about COVID-19,” he told host of Yen Nsempa, Nana Yaa Brefo co-hosted by Isaac Ekow JB on May 14.

Awuku hailed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as more proactive and pragmatic in governance. He asserted that the NPP’s swift and decisive measures along with timely interventions have been instrumental in saving lives during the pandemic.

Addressing the comparison between the two political parties, Awuku dismissed any notion of equivalence, highlighting the NPP’s superior performance in crisis management and governance. He underscored the NPP’s commitment to periodic updates and effective measures in combating COVID-19.

“If you compare both the NDC and NPP side to side, it won’t work, our periodic updates and measures our government put in place along with the timely intervention allocated to COVID-19 saved more lives so if you compare us and put us in the same circle, it won’t work,” he stressed.

On the economic front, Awuku defended the NPP’s handling of the economy, noting that they inherited an “IMF economy” from the NDC in 2017 and despite facing challenges, he commended the NPP’s bold implementation of landmark policies such as the Free Senior High School (SHS) initiative, which has provided educational opportunities to over 1.2 million Ghanaians.

“The NPP inherited an economy in January 2017 that was an IMF economy and this is one thing people don’t know, the NDC took Ghana to IMF.”

“But the truth of the matter is that in the face of challenges the NPP still courageously implemented one of the single biggest interventions since independence, which is the free SHS policy, it gave over 1.2 million Ghanaians an opportunity to go to school,” Awuku stated.
