Eddie Nketiah: Delighted to have opportunity to choose between England and Ghana

Africa-Press – Ghana. Arsenal youngster Eddie Nketiah thrilled to have the opportunity to choose between Ghana and England as he ponders his long-term international future.

The 22-year-old has confirmed his desire to switch nationality to Ghana and confirmed the move to play for the African giants at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Arsenal playmaker confirmed his decision to switch from the European country to play for the country of his parents just one week after Ghana’s leading football news outfit exclusively revealed the move.

Ghana FA authorities are far advanced in their move to capture the youngster from England as talks have been held already with the family of the player over the switch.

His Ghanaian team-mate Thomas Partey has also piled the pressure on the youngster who now is keen to make the move to play for the Black Stars with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar looming.

Now Nketiah himself has confirmed the decision to play for the Black Stars as both of his parents are Ghanaian even though he was born in London.

He is delighted with the chance to choose between his origin Ghana and place of birth England.

“It’s always an opportunity to do that,” he told The Beautiful Game podcast

“At the moment my full focus is obviously my club this season. Once that is finished, then I can really sit down with my family and have that kind of discussion.

“So I will just say it’s open to both. I am not closing the door to anything. Obviously, it’s great to have the opportunity.

‘Of course it is a possibility. I’m open to both, playing for Ghana and playing for England as well. It’s always good to have the opportunity to potentially do that.”

With the confirmation coming from the talented player himself, Nketiah could be playing out alongside Thomas Partey for Ghana come the World Cup.

Despite being the record England U21 goalscorer, Nketiah has been ignored for call-ups into the England senior team.

As he is yet to be capped at senior level for the Three Lions, he is qualified to make the switch and play for Ghana through his family.

The young footballer is British by birth. However, Eddie Nketiah parents are not from England.

They are Ghanaians. That also means Eddie Nketiah origin is Ghana, where he gets his ancestry.

The 22-year-old has made 17 appearances for England U21 and has scored 16 goals.

But Nketiah is still eligible to make a switch as he is more likely to play regularly for the Black Stars than for senior national team of England where there’s an embarrassment of riches in his position.

Nketiah has also played for England at the U18, U19 and U20.
