Africa-Press – Ghana. The Ewe Muslim Community has launched its maiden Volta/Accra Conference in Ho, with a focus on uniting Ewe Muslims and strengthening their role in national Muslim development.
The conference, themed “One Ummah, One Voice: Advancing the Role of Ewe Muslims in National Muslim Development,” seeks to provide a platform for dialogue, reflection, and action among Ewe Muslims across Ghana.
Delivering the keynote address, Hajj B.M. Adam, Chief Executive Officer of the Zakat Fund, praised the resilience and contributions of the Ewe people, particularly in education and public service. He recalled the critical role played by Ewe teachers in Ghana’s northern regions during the early expansion of national education.
“If you look at the number of professors, engineers, doctors, and leaders who emerged from the North in the past, much credit goes to the sacrifices of Ewe teachers who served in areas others refused postings to,” he noted.
Hajj Adam added that the values of discipline, resilience, and service inherent in Ewe culture align closely with Islamic principles, making the integration of Ewes into Islam a natural extension of their values. He urged the community to continue prioritising education, service, and unity as central pillars of faith and national contribution.
Representing the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V, Paramount Chief of Abutia Traditional Area, commended the initiative, stressing the role of religion in shaping morals, discipline, and peace.
“As traditional leaders, we recognise the indispensable role of faith in building the moral fabric of our society. Whether Christian, Muslim, or adherents of African traditional religion, all faiths serve as anchors of discipline, unity, and social cohesion,” he said.
Togbe Gidi called for stronger collaboration among religious leaders, traditional authorities, and government to tackle challenges such as youth unemployment, moral decline, and national disunity.
Delivering a message on behalf of the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. Delali Bright Kugbadzor, Special Aide, lauded the spirit of unity between the Ewe and Muslim communities. He urged members to be peacebuilders, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
Togbui Ahmed Abass Amedor, Leader of the Ewe Muslim Community in the Volta Region, outlined the purpose of the Volta/Accra Conference. These include strengthening fraternity among Ewe Muslims, addressing community challenges, adopting a working constitution, electing national leaders, and developing strategies for Da’wa (outreach) and Tabligh (propagation).
He announced that the main National Conference would be held at the Accra National Mosque from October 3 to 5, 2025.
The launch brought together traditional leaders, religious clerics, government officials, and members of the Ewe Muslim community, all united in their call for integration, unity, and service to humanity.
