Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Charles Amofa, the President of the Ghana Bowls Federation (GBF) has commended World Bowls Federation hierarchy for successfully launching the Ghana chapter of one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

The delegation present at the launch of the GBF included Mr Brett O. Riley, World Bowls President; Mr Sue Beatt, Chairperson of the Scottish Sports Association and Executive Board Member of World Bowls; James Owen, World Para Bowls President; and David Hamer, Bowls South Africa President.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Riley said bowls originated in Egypt 5,000 years ago, where archaeologists discovered artefacts and hieroglyphics that depict people playing a game that resembles modern-day bowling.

He noted that Bowls has numerous benefits like muscle strengthening, cognitive benefits, mental health benefits, health benefits and social benefits.

“Bowls was a decision-making sport, and everyone, both male and female, from six years to over sixty can play, as well as people with disabilities,” said President of World Bowls.

He said there were events going on round the world which Ghana was invited to participate in.

The events included the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Bowls World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.

He also promised to develop an academy in Ghana where other international competitions can be held.

Mr Mohammed Muniru, the Secretary General of the Ghana Olympic Committee, welcomed the new discipline and also promised to support the growth of the sport.

Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), urged Ghanaians, especially kids and the youth, to take bowls as one of the sports to play.

He said Bowls could take people to the international level and urged corporate Ghana to support Bowls.

The NSA boss was glad Ghana was leading the sport in West Africa, as it can create employment and be played in schools and colleges.

Mr Alfred Kotey Ashie, MP for Odododiodio, and Mr Archibald Darku Boateng of El-Sayus Company and some Asafoanyemei from the Ga Traditional Area took part in the demonstration of the sport at the launch.

Some dignitaries present at the launch include Mr Bright Asempa of the Ghana Tourism Authority, and Col. Richard Akoto of the Ghana Armed Forces.
