Africa-Press – Ghana. Ghana coach Otto Addo has credited former coaches CK Akonnor and Milovan Rajevac after securing 2022 World Cup qualification with the Black Stars.
The Black Stars held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja to book their place in this year’s Mundial in Qatar.
Ghana qualified with a 1-1 aggregate scoreline and on away goal rule as the first leg ended 0-0 at the Babayara Stadium in Kumasi last Friday.
Arsenal star Thomas Partey opened the scoring of the match after 10 minutes as his shot from close beat goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong levelled matters for the Super Eagles twelve minutes after converting from the penalty spot.
Speaking after the game, Addo acknowledged the efforts of the former Black Stars coaches who began the journey before he took over in the World Cup qualifications
“Also, Tony Baffoe always supported me since I am a kid I know since I am forty years old and surely big thanks since this was only two games there was a lot of work which was done before. Milovan Rajevac, CK Akonnor they all belonged to this together,” he said.
Akonnor started the World Cup qualification but he was replaced with Serbian gaffer Rajevac following a defeat to South Africa in the early stages of the qualifiers.
Rajevac was sacked after Ghana’s poor showing at the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon where the Black Stars exited after the group stages.
Addo was appointed to lead the Black Stars in the World Cup play-off against Nigeria.
