Ghana comes top as CAA Region II Championships ends

Africa-Press – Ghana. The CAA Region II Championship ended at the University of Ghana Stadium on Wednesday with Team Ghana topping the chart.

Team Ghana left the competition as the biggest winners – winning gold in the high jump men, 200 metres women, 1500 Decathlon men and the 4×400 men.

Ocansey Kennedy who won the gold in the men’s high jump with a personal best of 2.18 metres fell short of the Olympic qualification mark of 2.33 but he’s got hopes of securing qualification in the next qualifiers in Cameroon.

“I’m working really hard, I’m trying my best to end the season at the Olympics so I’m still trying to get the qualification mark and I know for sure that maybe in Cameroon, I’m going to get the mark,” he said.

With the 4×400 metres men also failing to qualify, they have also set their sights on the next qualification event in Cameroon.

“The African Senior Championships in Cameroon will help us to get the qualification,” they explained.

Mary Boakye and Mariam Fatawu also won gold and silver in the 200 meters and the 400 meters hurdles women respectively and are also prepped for securing qualification to the Olympics in the last qualification event in Cameroon.

It was a good event for Ghana, however, failure to secure qualification to Paris means they’d have to put in much effort in the next qualifying event if they are to compete in Paris.
