Ghana Mining Awards Honors Zijin for Innovation

Africa-Press – Ghana. Zijin Golden Ridge Limited has been recognised for its commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation at the 2025 Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA), organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The company placed third in the Best Performer in Environmental Management category and second in the Best Performer in Innovation category.

The awards ceremony, held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, brought together major players in Ghana’s mining industry.

Mr Agyemang Okyere, General Manager of Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, said the company earned second place in the Best Performer in Innovation award for championing the Stockpile Ground Engaging Tools (GET) Extraction Solution.

He explained that the solution screens and removes all scrap metals using a highly sensitive magnetic plate before feeding material to the crusher, reducing the risk of crusher jams, preventing costly repairs, and improving production and utilisation outcomes.

The company placed third in the Best Performer in Environmental Management category for its reforestation initiatives in Ghana’s mining industry.

“The company has committed to restore 303 hectares of degraded land through forest tree plantations as compensation for areas deforested by mining operations. This represents three times the area allocated within the forest reserve for mining as a reforestation offset,” he said.

Mr Okyere indicated that in 2014, Akyem Gold Mines established a 60-hectare mixed indigenous timber and Cedrela odorata plantation within a degraded portion of its mine site. The remaining 243 hectares were allocated in 2016 through the Forestry Commission of Ghana for reforestation on already degraded land.

He said winning the awards demonstrates Zijin’s dedication to excellence and responsible mining, noting the company has distinguished itself despite joining Ghana’s mining sector only in April 2025.

“These recognitions are a proud moment for us and evidence of our commitment and values. We will continue to grow, collaborate, and share our success with our stakeholders and Ghana,” he said.

Mr Okyere added that Zijin Golden Ridge Limited’s life of mine is expected to be extended by 20 years, with ore mining projected to increase from 27 million tonnes in 2025 to 37 million tonnes in 2026, and further to 53 million tonnes by 2028.

Zijin Golden Ridge Limited is a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group Limited, one of the world’s largest mining groups with operations in 18 countries.
