Africa-Press – Ghana. President John Dramani Mahama has presented 40 metric tonnes of made-in-Ghana cocoa products as humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza in Palestine.
The items were received by Mr Abdulfatah Ahmed Khalil Alasattari, the Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana.
The donation was a demonstration of the Ghanaian Government compassion towards the ongoing humanitarian crises in the besieged enclave of Gaza.
President Mahama, in his remarks during the presentation of the items at the Presidency in Accra, noted that the images and stories emerging from the conflict zones, particularly the suffering of innocent civilians, especially women and children, were heartbreaking.
“They are a painful reminder that behind every headline and every statistic, there are human lives. People who long for peace, dignity and hope,” he said.
The President said the Government was pleased to extend a humanitarian donation to the people of the State of Palestine.
“This donation is both symbolic and practical. It is symbolic because cocoa is one of Ghana’s most treasured natural commodities,” he said.
“It represents a significant source of economic livelihood for millions of Ghanaian farmers and families and embodies our national values of resilience, warmth and generosity.
“It is practical because cocoa is a powerful superfood. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. It supports the immune system. It promotes cardiovascular health and enhances brain function and emotional well-being.”
He said Cocoa products were also a natural energy booster and a vital source of essential minerals, particularly from iron and magnesium, which were crucial for women and children’s health.
He reiterated that Cocoa products had also been found beneficial in the management of hypertension.
“We sincerely hope that these cocoa products will provide comfort, nourishment and a tangible expression of our solidarity to the families facing an unimaginable hardship.”
The President said Ghana’s humanitarian support also reflected the principled stand in favour of international peace, justice and human dignity.
“We remain firm in our support for a negotiated two-state solution to the Palestinian question. This is in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, one that guarantees the indelible rights of both Palestinians and Israelis to coexist peacefully side by side within secure and recognised borders.”
“ We continue to call on all parties to the conflict to embrace diplomacy, commit to dialogue and end the cycle of violence.
“We can achieve lasting peace in the region through sincere engagement and goodwill,” President Mahama said.
He said as a country that had walked the difficult path of nation-building, reconciliation and democratic progress, Ghana believed deeply in the power of negotiation, the strength of peaceful resolution and the possibility of renewal after pain.
“We therefore urge the international community not to relent in its support for all efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and provide critical humanitarian assistance to those affected,” he said.
“It is in our collective interest as a global community to preserve lives, to protect dignity and uphold the tenets of justice and peace.”
President Mahama further called on the Israeli authorities to open the borders so that humanitarian aid could flow into Gaza.
Mr Abdulfatah Ahmed Khalil Alasattari, the Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana, on behalf of President Mahmoud Abbas, the Government and People of Palestine, the children and women of Gaza, extended warm appreciation to President Mahama and the Government and People of Ghana for the kind gesture.
“We appreciate this support. All of us know that in Gaza now there is starvation and genocide against my people,” he said.
Mr Alasattari commended Ghana for all the time stand by the side of justice and human rights and international law.
