
Africa-Press – Ghana. A Ghanaian water expert and global advocate, has been elected Vice President Academic of the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) at the University of Calgary, Canada.
The election of Mr Jacob Kwasi Amengor, a PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering, recently, marks a significant milestone not only in his academic journey but also in the growing visibility of African leadership in academic institutions across the globe.
He disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, saying his new role as the GSA Vice President Academic, accorded him the responsibility of leading academic advocacy for over 8,500 graduate students.
Similarly, “I’m tasked to manage adjudication processes for awards and grants, and working closely with the university leadership to enhance academic policies and support systems.”
Mr Amengor brings a wealth of practical experience from a decade of professional work with Ghana Water Limited, where he served as a Water Quality Analyst.
Beyond his local impact, he is a respected voice in the global water sector and a former Chair of the International Water Association (IWA) Young Water Professionals Steering Committee, where he championed youth inclusion and professional development in the water sector worldwide.
He currently serves as a fellow of the Membership Engagement Committee of the IWA Board of Directors, contributing to the strategic direction and inclusive growth of one of the world’s leading water organisations.
“This appointment is a reflection of how local experiences can inform global solutions, and I am proud to bring the perspective of a Ghanaian water professional to academic leadership in Canada, and I remain committed to creating opportunities for others, especially from the Global South, to lead and influence change,” Amengor added.
In addition to his academic and global leadership, Mr Amengor also leads a social enterprise focused on solar-powered mechanised water systems, designed to serve underserved communities with minimal human and financial input.
His journey from the laboratories and field stations of Ghana Water Limited to international leadership roles and academic governance is an inspiring story of excellence, innovation, and service.
It underscores the potential of young African professionals to shape the future of academic equity and global development, and his tenure ends in May 2026.
