Africa-Press – Ghana. Ghanaian Parliamentarian, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has revealed how the nickname of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars originated.

According to the Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency, Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah was inspired to name the senior national football team after a football team in Peki in the Volta Region.

Earlier assertions indicated the team was nicknamed the Black Stars after the Black Star of Africa in the flag of Ghana

However, Dafeamekpor shared a different account on how Dr Kwame Nkrumah got the nickname for the Ghana national team.

“The name Black Stars was adopted from a football team which was located in Peki. Nkrumah had gone there to visit his friend in the 50s,” Dafeamekpor said on TV3.

“When Nkrumah got to Peki, they had Peki Black Stars. It was a team in Avetime so he adopted the name.”

“There are historical accounts, the name of the football club. It’s a known fact in Peki. It appears that we haven’t made the effort to amplify it enough that the Black Stars Nkurmah adopted if from Peki Black Stars.

“So anytime he visited . they played community games. Nkrumah visited (one time) and the name was fascinating, Peki Black Stars, so he took it and adopted it for the Black Stars,” the MP said

Ghana have won the Africa Cup of Nations on four occasions in 1965, 1968, 1978 and 1982.

The Black Stars will be making their fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.
