Africa-Press – Ghana. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said they were in a better position than Ghana leading into Thursday’s crucial World Cup qualifiers.
South Africa is at home against Zimbabwe while Ethiopia will host Ghana at the Orlando Stadium.
Bafana is currently at the top of Group G.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said they were much happier to be in the position they’re in as compared to that of Ghana as the teams approach the home straight of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Group G comes to a head on Thursday when Ethiopia plays Ghana at the Orlando Stadium in the 15:00 kick-off while South Africa and Zimbabwe meet at the FNB Stadium six hours later.
South Africa leads the group with 10 points from their four games while Ghana has a point less from the same number of games.A Ghana loss and a Bafana win will decide the outcome of the group and render Sunday’s clash between the Black Stars and Bafana in Cape Coast as an academic fixture.
Broos wasn’t about to get ahead of himself, but said their fate looks much better than that of Ghana.
“It’s better to in the situation that we’re in as compared to the one of Ghana,” Broos said.
“They’re under enormous pressure for this game because if they don’t win, it could be a disaster for them.
“That doesn’t make our game any easier because we also need to win against Zimbabwe. However, I prefer the situation the way it is now.
“I hope we can keep things the way they are for the Ghana game on Sunday.”While Broos has come in for constant criticism with regards to his selections, the former Belgian international felt he’s starting to get the best out of his team.
Bafana’s qualification start was shaky with the away draw against Zimbabwe, but their home win against Ghana strengthened the bond in the team.
Broos hopes that the excellence that is building in the team will be rewarded with a spot in the final qualifying round.
“You can say what you want as a coach, but if the players don’t take it in, then it’s of no use,” Broos said.
“From the beginning, I felt like the players wanted to go with me in the direction that I selected.
“We hesitated in the first game against Zimbabwe because none of us knew what was expected from each other.”We gelled better from the Ghana game and now we feel like it’s a team, when you look at how the players treat each other and the confidence is high.
“We’ve been together for three months and I hope all the good work we’ve been putting in will be compensated by getting to the next round.”
