Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta, the Minister of Roads and Highways, says unpatriotic activities and indiscipline are the causes of the flood situation at the Sakumono railway line.

“The Lagoon is being compromised. People are filling the lagoon (to build houses), we are scrambling for land as if the world is coming to an end tomorrow and the flood situation is a result of our unpatriotic activities and indiscipline,’’ he stated during a tour of some road projects after Wednesday’s downpour.

He said the Government was investing so much to manage the flooding in the country and said it was important the citizenry supported such efforts. The Minister reiterated the Government’s commitment to the road sector and said systems were being put in place to ensure that roads constructed were preserved for the future.

‘‘We are going to put up about two-three downtrace to control the weight and height of vehicles. No vehicle weighing more than 10 tonnes will ply the Sakumono Railway line road. Vehicles of such weight will use the Tema Motorway. This is going to be a policy position of government almost immediately.” Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta indicated.

The Minister urged authorities in charge of the Lagoon to ensure people did not build on the site. “The people in charge of the Lagoon should be strong and firm in ensuring that people are prohibited from building there,” he added.

The Minister also inspected the construction of the interchange at Abossey Okai and assured the traders that, once the engineers were done with the interchange and the road construction, they would not experience flooding.
