Africa-Press – Ghana. Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, nominee for Chief Justice, has pledged to make it his priority to ensure that presidential election petitions are fully adjudicated before the swearing-in of a new President on January 7.
Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that resolving election disputes ahead of inauguration would eliminate uncertainties that often cloud the transition process.
Currently, Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 99 provides a 42-day window for adjudicating presidential election petitions.
However, the nominee argued that if elections are held on November 7 or 8, the timeline would be sufficient to conclude any disputes before the January 7 inauguration.
With 17 years of experience on the Supreme Court bench, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie underscored his commitment to judicial efficiency.
He revealed plans to leverage artificial intelligence in empanelling judges, a move he believed would fast-track the adjudication of cases and enhance transparency in the justice system.
His remarks signal a broader vision to modernize Ghana’s judiciary, ensuring that electoral justice is delivered swiftly and decisively, thereby strengthening public confidence in democratic governance.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, also the Acting Chief Justice, said if approved, his tenure would be anchored on three pillars including procedural clarity, efficiency, accountability, and open justice.
“The law should be the law for everybody,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stressed, underscoring his belief that justice must not depend on one’s social status.
The nominee highlighted his integrity and experience as qualifications to lead the judiciary into an era of transparency and renewed trust.
He promised not only to preserve the institution’s legacy but also to strengthen its credibility in the eyes of the public.
