Africa-Press – Ghana. The KGL Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sports development by sponsoring the just-ended U-17 Inter-Regional Colts Championship, which concluded at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex.

The nine-day tournament, which has become Ghana’s premier platform for unearthing and nurturing young football talent, brought together 12 regional teams, including two elite academies, in a fierce contest that showcased some of the country’s most promising players.

Ashanti Region emerged champions after defeating defending title holders Western Region 2-1 in a thrilling finale, clinching their second title in the competition’s five-year history. Central Region settled for bronze while Greater Accra finished fourth.

Greater Accra’s midfield star, Jeremiah Abalo, was named Overall Best Player after a string of impressive performances that thrilled fans at both the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence and the McDan Teshie Sports Complex.

Individual awards also went to Western Region’s goalkeeper, Frank Abu, who was adjudged Best Goalkeeper, while Ashanti Region’s strikers, Agyei Duah and Alidu Issah, shared the Top Scorer award with seven goals apiece. Their teammate, Kelvin Baffoe, was crowned Most Promising Player, confirming Ashanti’s dominance in both team and individual honours.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr Elliot Dadey, Chief Executive Officer of the KGL Foundation, underscored the Foundation’s dedication to empowering youth through sports.

“At KGL Foundation, we are deeply committed to empowering our youth through sports. This tournament was not only about competition but also about fostering teamwork, discipline, and leadership among young athletes,” he said.

Launched in 2021, the KGL U-17 Championship is backed by a five-year, $1 million partnership with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and has become an integral part of the GFA’s grassroots football development strategy.

The Foundation, which operates across five thematic areas, including sports, arts and culture, youth empowerment, health and education, has also extended support to several national initiatives. These include contributions to the National Lottery Authority’s (NLA) Good Causes Foundation, scholarships for over 150 brilliant but needy students annually, and health infrastructure projects such as the construction of a new Mental Health Facility in Kumasi.

Mr Dadey noted that the Foundation’s approach to social responsibility is rooted in community engagement.

“Our approach is simple, yet deeply intentional: we go into communities, we listen, we learn, and we co-create. We engage not as distant donors, but as equal partners, collaborating with those who live the realities we seek to improve,” he stated.

Over the past four years, the KGL Group has contributed more than GH₵6 million to the NLA Good Causes Foundation, GH₵9 million to the Stabilisation Fund, and millions more towards health, education, and disaster relief projects across Ghana.

With the success of the 2025 U-17 Colts Championship, the KGL Foundation says it remains committed to harnessing the potential of Ghana’s youth, both on and off the field, while reinforcing its role as a key partner in national development.
