Africa-Press – Ghana. The Clerk of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Reverend Dr. Lawson K. Dzanku Ghana Tuesday cautioned the youth not to see government’s decision to license farmers to cultivate cannabis as its endorsement of wee smoking.

“Licensing for the cultivation of Cannabis is purely for medicinal and industrial purposes,” he stated.

Rev. Dr Dzanku gave the caution in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Ho in reaction to government’s decision to license farmers to cultivate medicinal and industrial cannabis.

He noted that the illegal cultivation and smoking of cannabis were still an offence under the laws of the country.

The Clerk stated that in his view licensing people to cultivate cannabis would not only improve the economic fortunes of the state but also create employment for the youth.

He advised Ghanaians not to see the decision with a “political lense” but rather the economic fortunes it would rake in for the country.

Rev Dr Dzanku praised the government for taking that bold decision, adding “let us all support the government to achieve the aim of the decision.”

He urged those who would be licensed to strictly adhere to the directives of government to plant only the medicinal and industrial cannabis.

The substance is said to be used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry.

Dr Basha Ligbi Head of Cannabis Regulations Department of the Narcotic Control Commission (NACOC) disclosed that any Ghanaian aged 18 years and above who owned land or has documented access to it may apply directly to NACOC for license to cultivate medicinal and industrial cannabis.

He made the disclosure on Class FM on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

Dr Ligbi stated that the application process is open, transparent, and did not require personal connections.
