Africa-Press – Ghana. Accra, Feb 20- The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 13th African Games, has confirmed 24 sporting disciplines for the 2023 Africa Games set to take place next year.
This was after a three-day Joint Technical Committee held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The three-day meeting was attended by continental federation heads, the Africa Union, and members of the LOC.
Amon the sporting disciplines are; Athletics, Armwrestling, Badminton, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Cycling, Fencing, Football, and Handball.
The rest are Field Hockey, Judo, Karate-Do, Netball, Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, and Teqball as demonstration sport.
The selection of the sporting disciplines was part of the LOC’s preparation towards the African Games. According to Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare, the selected disciplines met the rigorous criteria set by the LOC.
He said the disciplines were able to meet conditions such as the popularity of the sport, availability of facilities for training and competitions, contributions from their respective international federations as well as organization of qualifiers for the event.
Dr. Asare was confident the Games would be one of the most successful events in recent times. The 2023 African Games is expected to take place August next year with 54 countries expected to compete in the games.
