Africa-Press – Ghana. Bill Eshun, a Journalist with Media General has been crowned the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Journalist of the Year at the Central Hotel in Accra.
The SWAG Sports Journalist of the Year award, introduced in 2021, was established to recognize and celebrate outstanding work by sports journalists each year.
Bill Eshun emerged as the winner, edging out other top contenders Yaw Ofosu Larbi, Nana Akua Amankwah, Fiifi Anaman and Nii Bruce Tagoe.
He clinched the prestigious award with his compelling story, “From Ajax Hopeful to Obuasi Hustler: No Legs, No Limits,” which chronicles the tragic yet inspiring journey of former youth football talent John Quansah.
Once on the verge of a promising career with Ajax Amsterdam, Quansah’s dreams were shattered by recurring injuries.
A seven-member committee, chaired by Madam Linda Asante Agyei, former Vice President of the Ghana Journalists Association, selected the piece as the standout entry among all contenders.
In his acceptance speech, Bill Eshun expressed gratitude to everyone who had influenced his journalism journey, acknowledging the mix of both challenging and rewarding moments along the way.
“To every single person that allowed me to tell their story, I say thank you. I know it was not easy. It was hard and I am immensely grateful for allowing me to tell your stories”.
He encouraged aspiring journalists to remain dedicated and consistent in order to excel in their profession.
Bill Eshun’s story has served as an inspiration to many journalists, having been featured in the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) awards in recent years.
He will be honoured at SWAG’s 50th Award ceremony this year.
