Africa-Press – Ghana. The Melcom Group of Companies has presented relief items to victims of the Appiatse explosion as part of its corporate social responsibility to assist the needy in society.
Mr Krishna Varma, the Ashanti Regional Manager of Melcom, presented bottled water, soyamilk, spaghetti and juice to the victims at the Saint Michael Catholic Parish Hall at Bogoso in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality of the Western Region.
Mr Godwin Avenorgbor, the Melcom Group Director of Communication, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the company was touched by the news of the devastation the people suffered.
“So, we have come with these gifts as our contribution to support what the Government of Ghana is providing to the residents,” he said. He said because Melcom valued the welfare of the citizens of Ghana, it rendered community related services to make life better for all.
“To avoid more loss of life of those directly affected by the displacement, we are certain that the immediate thing to do is to provide food, drinks and water as we deliberate on other forms of help the community may require in the next few weeks,” Mr Avenorgbor said.
He expressed Melcom’s condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery, as he appealed to other institutions to support the victims in these difficult times.
Mr Francis Abeiku Yankah, the Municipal Coordinator of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), thanked Melcom and pledged the items would be put to good use.
He explained that the number of victims displaced, so far, was about 977 and it kept increasing as more were discharged from the hospitals. Mr Yankah said in the meantime, Future Gold Resources, a mining company, has offered to provide their resettlement camp for use by the victims.
