Africa-Press – Ghana. Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has rallied Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to champion President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda for a cleaner Ghana.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to restoring cleanliness and order across all communities.

The Minister made the call during a working visit to the Okaikwei North, Ga Central, Ga North, and Ga South Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies as part of the ongoing National Sanitation Week.

On Saturday, 6th September 2025, President John Dramani Mahama, officially launched the re-introduction of the National Sanitation Day at the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS), Ogbojo–Madina, urging Ghanaians to unite in keeping the nation clean.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, is part of the broader “Clean Up Ghana” agenda aimed at tackling unsanitary conditions, reducing disease outbreaks, and improving the quality of life of citizens.

The exercise will be observed nationwide on the first Saturday of every month.

Addressing the media after the inspections, the Minister commended the MMDCEs for heeding to the call and mobilised resources to ensure their jurisdictions were cleaned and prepared for the upcoming Christmas festivities.

“The ongoing National Sanitation Week is not a one-off exercise, but a broader national reset agenda aimed at making Ghana clean and bright,” the Minister said.

He explained that sanitation activities would continue beyond the designated week, with the ultimate goal of cultivating a sustained 24-hour sanitation culture nationwide.

To complement the clean-up efforts, Mr. Ibrahim highlighted the nationwide distribution of streetlights by Regional Ministers to various assemblies.

This intervention, he said, was to illuminate streets and public spaces, ensuring the country was both “clean and bright” by Saturday, December 20, 2025.

The Minister commended the media for their crucial role in amplifying sanitation messages and holding duty bearers accountable.

He, however, urged MMDCEs to demonstrate intrinsic leadership and initiative, emphasising that progress must not depend on external pressure.

Mr. Ibrahim cautioned that his Ministry would continue with unannounced monitoring visits to assess progress on the ground.

He stated that accountability at the local level would be significantly heightened through the combined force of media scrutiny, regular field inspections, and the National Complaint Centre.
