Africa-Press – Ghana. The Minority Caucus in Parliament has expressed concern over the arrest and remand of Mr. Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the caucus, the circumstances surrounding his arrest revealed a disturbing pattern of the government weaponizing the judicial system against perceived opponents.
A statement signed by Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Second Deputy Minority Whip and NPP Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, and issued to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday said.
It said: “This government has abandoned its constitutional obligations, choosing instead the path of authoritarian consolidation.”
“Judicial persecution, executive overreach, economic manipulation, and security failures have converged into a perfect storm that endangers both democracy and development in Ghana,” it added.
The statement also drew attention to the alleged government’s neglect of urgent national crises, including communal violence in northern Ghana that had claimed lives and displaced thousands.
“Our northern compatriots deserve urgent intervention, not the neglect and indifference that have characterized the state’s response so far,” it said.
The statement called on the Ghana Police Service to guarantee protection for all political actors and abandon its posture as an alleged tool of the ruling party.
It said: “Ghana’s democracy is too precious to be surrendered to fear, intimidation, and authoritarian excess.”
Mr Baffoe, popularly known as “Abronye,” was on Tuesday remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court.
He is facing a charge of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and publication of false news and is expected to reappear on Friday, September 12, 2025.
His plea was not taken before the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.
