Africa-Press – Ghana. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament, Thursday staged a walkout in protest against the alleged continued detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Mr Antwi Boasiako is alleged to have been in custody since Tuesday, May 27 after failing to meet the conditions for a GH¢50 million bail, granted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Leading the protest, Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressed the House, accusing EOCO of unjust treatment, and warned that the agency’s actions could have serious political consequences.
“Mr Speaker, we will protest by absenting ourselves from Parliament and joining him. We are all going to sleep there with him,” he declared.
The Minority Leader emphasized that the protest was not about undermining the investigative process but about ensuring fairness and consistency in how citizens were treated.
“Mr Speaker, I pray that my colleagues will support this so that with one voice, EOCO will know that when it got to this matter of Chairman Wontumi, Parliament was united,” he added.
In a show of solidarity, the Minority Members of Parliament marched to the EOCO offices to express their support for Chairman Wontumi.
Osahen Afenyo-Markin stated that their action was not just an expression of sympathy, but a protest against the unfair and excessive treatment of Mr Antwi Boasiako.
“We are not here to undermine the investigative process, but to ensure fairness and consistency in how citizens are treated,” he emphasized.
