Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the late Robert Mugabe as a “legend of the African Liberation struggle”.
According to Mr Mahama, the longest serving Zimbabwean President will always be remembered as a great freedom fighter despite his flaws later in life.
Commiserating with the family and the people of Zimbabwe, Mr Mahama, in Facebook post wrote: “Sad to hear the passing of a legend of the African Liberation struggle, Comrade Robert Mugabe.
“Despite his flaws in later years, he will always be remembered as a great fighter for freedom and a dedicated Pan Africanist”.
“He will be remembered for the great strides Zimbabwe made in education and healthcare in the immediate post-independence period,” he added.
Zimbabwe’s founding leader Robert Mugabe died in Singapore aged 95, two sources in touch with his family told ZimLive on Friday.
Mugabe had been battling ill-health and President Emmerson Mnangagwa told a Cabinet meeting two weeks ago that doctors had “taken him off life support.”
He became the first prime minister of the newly independent Zimbabwe after elections in February 1980.
Articulate and smartly dressed, Mugabe came to power commanding the respect of a nation. He had a strong head start, inheriting a country with a stable economy, solid infrastructure and vast natural resources.
Mugabe, ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, was being treated in Singapore since April.
