Africa-Press – Ghana. Former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen says he still cherishes his relationship with the party despite announcing his resignation and deciding to contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.
He says he is still committed to the ideals of the founding fathers of the party.
Addressing some supporters and the media at the Movenpick Hotel in Accra, Mr Kyerematen said his decision to go independent should not be seen as a destructive force.
“My decision to contest [the 2024 elections] as an independent candidate will not destroy the party,” he said on Monday, September 25, “but rather provide the party an opportunity to participate in the government of national unity in the future.”
The former Minister of Trade and Industry was confident of winning the elections as he assured supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being a president for them as well.
“If elected as president, I will also be president for the NDC,” he stressed.
Mr Kyerematen’s withdrawal from the NPP comes exactly 20 days after he announced his withdrawal from the party’s presidential race.
He had been a frontrunner in the primaries until Saturday, August 26 when he was dealt a blow by super-delegates who voted for Kennedy Agyapong to come second to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the Super Delegates Conference.
Despite coming third, qualifying him for the November 4 final elections, Mr Kyerematen withdrew from the entire contest.
He had cited intimidation of his supporters and partiality on the part of leadership against the other contenders.
Leadership had launched investigations into all his claims and assured of making them public.
The NPP is expected to react to the latest decision of its founding member to resign and go independent.
