Africa-Press – Ghana. Newcastle United have confirmed that Callum Wilson will be out for eight weeks after suffering a calf injury.

The striker pulled up in the Magpies’ recent 1-1 draw with Manchester United at St. James’ Park, and fans were waiting with bated breath over the results of a scan to reveal the severity of the injury.

And, as revealed in a tweet by the club, the prognosis is not particularly good as Wilson is now set to miss six or seven crucial Premier League games.

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Callum Wilson will be sidelined for eight weeks following the calf injury he sustained in the game against Manchester United in December.

The news couldn’t have come at a worst time for Newcastle United.

Not only are the club currently sitting 19th in the Premier League table – two points from safety – they were also utterly humiliated in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Magpies suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to League One Cambridge United in front of their own fans at St. James’ Park – with a 56th minute Joe Ironside goal being the difference between the sides on the day.

Speaking after the game, head coach Eddie Howe was as disappointed as you’d expect.

“We’re desperately disappointed,” he said. “We really prepared well for this game, and we played a very strong team. But, ultimately, we found a goalkeeper in superb form, and a team that defended for their lives, and we couldn’t break them down.

“I don’t think there was anything wrong with our attitude, we just couldn’t deliver the quality to score. The players are very disappointed.”

In light of Wilson’s injury layoff, 90min revealed that Newcastle are keen to sign a striker during the January transfer window.

The club are currently monitoring a number of options, with Gabriel Barbosa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Eddie Nketiah, Edin Dzeko, Divock Origi, Anthony Martial, Dominic Solanke and Alfredo Morelos all on their radar.
