Africa-Press – Ghana. Everton star Alex Iwobi is one of the notable absentees in Nigeria squad for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff against Ghana.
The winger was conspicuously missing when Nigeria announced their squad on Friday morning.
The list made up of 32 players with all playing outside Nigeria did not include Iwobi because the former Arsenal man is serving a suspension.
Iwobi was controversially sent off in Nigeria’s final game at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Substitute Iwobi received a straight red card in the shock 1-0 defeat against Tunisia. Initially, referee decided that challenge merited a yellow card but after consulting VAR changed the colour to red.
Iwobi’s situation is similar to that of Ghana captain Andre Ayew who is expected not to be included in Black Stars squad for the two games.
Nigeria would have loved to Iwobi in the squad but they have enough firepower to overcome.
The first leg will be played at the Cape Coast Stadium on March 25 with Abuja hosting the second leg three days later.
