Africa-Press – Ghana. Mrs. Jemima Ocansey, Director Social Welfare Unit of the Ningo Prampram District Assembly (NiPDA) has expressed worry over the rate at which irresponsible parenthood was becoming dominating the communities in the district.

Speaking at a stakeholder’s engagement with some residents and opinion leaders including; some identifiable groups in Prampram, Mrs Ocansey noted that children were gifts from God and it was the responsibility of the parent to take good care of them.

She revealed that there were reports about some parents in the various communities who gave out their children to engage in hazardous labour for a meager amount of money in communities such as Akosombo, Juapong, and other places in the country.

She said the act was unacceptable and constitutes a violation of the fundamental human rights of the children. She advised young ladies to invest their time into trades and activities that would be of benefit to them in the future and not allow themselves to be abused by their male counterparts.

“If you are not ready for babies do not go into any relationship with a guy,” she cautioned.

Mrs. Ocansey stated that children needed to be protected at all times saying that, ladies who throw away their children after birth should desist from such acts as it could lead to their arrest and subsequent prosecution and jail when caught.

She again mentioned that residents should not hesitate to report any form of abuse to the Social Welfare Unit at the District Assembly for the appropriate action to be taken. Mrs. Ocansey also called on the men to take responsibility for their children even when they are no longer with the child’s mothers.
