NPP votes to elect Parliamentary Candidate for Assin North by-election

Africa-Press – Ghana. Over 500 delegates have gathered at the Church of Pentecost in Akonfudi as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects its flagbearer for the June 27 by-election in Assin North Constituency in the Central Region.

When nominations opened on Wednesday, May 3, two aspirants – Charles Opoku and Frederick Freeman Amoah Kyei – picked forms. Therefore, the two will vie for the slot. They both went through the vetting successfully.

Before voting began, the two swore an oath of allegiance to the NPP to support the party win the by-elections in the event of a defeat. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong charged supporters to remain united to reclaim the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The winner of Wednesday’s primaries will come head-to-head against James Gyakye Quayson, whom the NDC is keeping faith with. Already, the opposition NDC has raised concerns about the eligibility of Charles Opoku to stand as the candidate of the NPP. According to the party’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, Mr Opoku is a registered voter in Tarkwa Nsuaem in the Western Region and will be ineligible to elected as PC for NPP in Assin North. This has since been dismissed by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).
