Africa-Press – Ghana. An aspiring parliamentarian of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Odododiodoo Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Michael Nii Yarboi Annan, has assured that there would be peace in the area after the internal primaries to elect a candidate for the 2024 elections.
The aspirant said what happened during the vetting was unfortunate, thus condemnable.
The vetting of parliamentary aspirants for the constituency was disrupted by violent acts on Friday, October 13.
Members of the camp of one of the candidates destroyed party properties, including chairs and an air conditioner and pelted stones at members of the vetting committee, citing unfairness.
The chaos occurred at the regional party office in South La, where three individuals, Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annan, were facing the committee in the hope of succeeding the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who is not seeking re-election.
Aspirants from the Odododiodoo Constituency were excluded in the vetting exercise that took place in February 2023, due to outstanding issues that the party needed to resolve.
Speaking to the issues on Monday, October 16, Nii Yarboi Annan said “the violence happened at the regional office and not Odododiodio Constituency”.
“It did not happen at Odododiodio and the filing was peaceful and they said I will be disqualified at the vetting.”
He added that “the vetting had been done and no one was disqualified so while on my way, we heard the constituency chairman was taken hostage”.
“It happened when we had left and those who were contesting me said I should be disqualified.
“They [vetting committee] brought the one who petitioned. He petitioned because he alleged that someone’s name has been deleted and mine had been inserted, so the register was opened for him to read and he was satisfied after reading.”
Mr. Yarboi Annan noted that “they are afraid of the internal competition, how much more the external elections”?
